Two Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots lost their lives on December 4 when their Pilatus PC-7 Mk II trainer plane crashed in Telangana during a regular training mission. The disaster happened near Toopran in the Medak district, and a Court of Inquiry was called to establish to determine the cause of the accident.
Trainer Aircraft: Facilitating Pilot Training
A trainer aircraft is specifically built for pilot and aircrew flying instruction. It provides a less difficult and forgiving environment for new pilots to learn the fundamentals before moving on to more advanced military aircraft.
IAF’s Trainer Aircraft Fleet
For basic training, the IAF currently uses 75 Pilatus PC-7 Mk II aircraft, followed by HAL Kiran for intermediate training and BAE Hawk for advanced training. The Pipistrel Virus is also utilized for Flight Safety and Air Wing Cadets.
Overview Of The Pilatus PC-7 Mk II
Pilatus Aircraft Ltd in Switzerland manufactures the PC-7 Mk II, a low-wing, turboprop trainer aircraft with tandem seats. The Mk II version, released in the 1990s, has a modern airframe and advanced avionics, and serves as a first training aircraft for cadets.
IAF’s Urgent Procurement
After the grounding of the indigenously developed HPT-32 in 2010 owing to tragic crashes, the IAF purchased 75 Pilatus PC-7 Mk II aircraft in 2012 to solve a critical shortage of trainer aircraft. The acquisition sought to address the critical need for basic flying training.
HTT-40 Contract
The Defence Ministry signed an agreement in March with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) to purchase 70 HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft. The HTT-40, which was designed in-house, has modern avionics and an air-conditioned cockpit, and is expected to replace the Pilatus PC-7 Mk II in the future years.
