The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) plan was recently extended for another five years by the government.
Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY)
The Indian government launched it in April 2020 in responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is intended to provide financial support to economically disadvantaged groups affected by the pandemic.
The program includes the distribution of 5 kg of free food grains each month, as well as cash payments to women and the elderly.
It was presented as part of the larger Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package, which aimed to provide aid to individuals affected by the pandemic, particularly the poor and marginalized.
Additionally, the scheme is open to all primitive tribal households, landless agricultural laborers, marginal farmers, rural artisans/craftsmen such as potters, tanners, slum dwellers, and people earning a living in the informal sector such as porters, coolies, rickshaw pullers, hand cart pullers, and other similar categories in both rural and urban areas.
All citizens who come from low-income homes are eligible.
According to the policy, the government provides 5 kg of free food grains per month in addition to the subsidized ration provided by the Public Distribution System under the National Food Security Act.
Eligibility Criteria
The initiative would be available to families who fall under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Priority Households (PHH) categories. State governments/union territory administrations will identify PHH based on criteria developed by them. States/UTs must identify AAY households using the criteria established by the Central Government:
Households headed by widows, terminally ill or crippled people, or those above the age of 60 who have no reliable means of subsistence or societal support.
Widows, terminally ill or disabled people, people over the age of 60, or unmarried women or men without family or community support or a reliable source of income.
