Students who study Physics, Chemistry, Biotechnology/Biology (together with English) as additional subjects after passing class 12 would be appear in the NEET UG entrance exam, according to the National Medical Commission (NMC).
They will also be eligible for eligibility certifications, according to the statement.
The decision was made in light of the National Education Policy, which allows for topic flexibility in Class 12, according to the commission.
Previously, students in Class 11th and 12th were required to study Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English for two years on a regular or continuous basis. Furthermore, the two years of study had to be done through conventional schools rather than through open schools or as a private candidate.
The former regulations prohibited the study of Biology, Biotechnology, or any other required subject as additional courses after graduating Class 12th, according to the NMC.
Due to the statutory regulations in this regard - the eligibility requirement for taking admission in an Undergraduate Medical Course in a Foreign Medical Institution Regulations, 2002 and the Screening Test Regulation, 2002 - this had a consequential bearing on candidates seeking admission in graduate and primary medical courses in foreign institutes, according to the commission.
The new rule will also apply to those students whose applications for eligibility certificates were previously denied. However, it stated that only those who become eligible after the date of the current public notification - November 22 - will be able take the NEET UG 2024 exam.
The NMC stated that the commission's judicial cases in this regard will be discontinued.
