The forest department in Uttarakhand has filed a case against a helicopter firm for allegedly landing a helicopter in a restricted zone of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary.
About Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary (KWS)
The KWS, also known as the Kedarnath Musk Deer Sanctuary, is located in the Uttarakhand districts of Rudraprayag and Chamoli.
It was named after the famed Hindu temple of Kedarnath, which sits just outside the sanctuary's northern border.
Its other name derives from its principal mission of preserving the endangered Himalayan musk deer.
It is the western Himalayas' largest protected area.
The sanctuary, which covers an area of 975.20 km2, was founded in 1972.
It is located in the upper Alaknanda and Mandakini River catchments.
The elevation ranges from 1,160 to 7,068 meters.
In the north, it is bounded by the peaks of Kedarnath (6940 m), Mandani (6193 m), and Chaukhamba (7068 m).
In the Palearctic realm, the area falls under the West Himalayan Zone.
Vegetation
Temperate forests cover much of the land.
Sub-alpine and alpine coniferous forests can be found in the higher and upper elevations.
The entire region is surrounded by lush green meadows at high altitude.
Flora
- Flora includes oak, rhododendrons, Chir Pine, Alpine meadows, and various Himalayan blooming plants.
Fauna
- Some mammals include Musk deer, Himalayan Thar, Himalayan Black Bear, Snow Leopard, and others, as well as birds such as Monal, Koklass, and Himalayan Griffon.
