A beautiful and rare event—a vivid red aurora—was recently spotted at the night sky observatories of Hanle and Merak in Ladakh. This is an unusual occurrence in India, where such occurrences are uncommon.
About Auroras
Auroras are spectacular light displays in the sky that frequently occur near the poles. They are caused by the collision of solar particles with the Earth's magnetic field. This collision produces vibrant light patterns that are a delight to behold.
Observations At Hanle And Merak
The Hanle observatory successfully captured photographs of the northern horizon aurora. Unfortunately, the Merak observatory, which is located near Pangong Tso, was hampered by neighboring mountains.
Hanle Aurora Events
This is not the first time the Hanle observatory has captured such an event; on April 23, another aurora was captured. Auroras are most commonly visible in polar regions and are uncommon in equatorial areas such as India. However, high solar activity can occasionally make them visible further away from the poles.
Increased Aurora Activity Expected
Researchers predict an increase in aurora events in the next years. This increase is caused by the 11-year solar cycle, and we are currently in an ascending phase, with more solar flares expected before the peak in 2025.
Hanle: A Dark Sky Reserve
Hanle is significant because it is India's sole black sky reserve, where efforts are undertaken to reduce light pollution, making it a perfect place for viewing such natural spectacles.
Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project
The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, which had previously been delayed significantly, suffered another setback on October 27. This project, located on the border of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, witnessed a significant hillside collapse on the dam's left side, resulting in material deposition into its reservoir. This obstructed the single working diversion tunnel, halting the flow of water downstream of the dam into the Subansiri River, a major tributary of the Brahmaputra.
