Description

Delhi's Education Minister, Atishi, has announced that schools will stay closed till November 10, 2023. The decision was made because the air quality index (AQI) in Delhi-NCR has been declining. Schools in grades 6 through 12 will have the option of switching to online education if they want.

Earlier this week, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal stated that primary schools would be closed on November 3 and 4 due to rising pollution levels.

Delhi Air Pollution

The statement comes as pollution levels in the capital have once again reached the "severe plus" category due to unfavorable wind conditions, particularly calm winds at night. The air quality index in Delhi has deteriorated from 415 on November 4 by 4 pm to 460 by 7 am on November 5, putting it in the severe plus category.

According to an Air Quality Early Warning System forecast provided on November 4, the AQI is projected to remain'severe' until November 7. The air quality in Delhi-NCR has deteriorated over the last week as a result of lowering temperatures, sluggish winds that inhibited pollution dispersion, and an increase in post-harvest paddy stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana.

If the AQI exceeds 450, the centre's air pollution management plan requires all emergency measures, including a ban on polluting trucks, commercial four-wheelers, and all sorts of construction, to be begun and enforced throughout the NCR.
