Description
Bhutan has become the world's first country to successfully sterilize and vaccinate its entire stray dog population, marking an important milestone for animal welfare and public health. The accomplishment follows a 14-year dog population control effort.
The Project For National Dog Population Management And Rabies Control
The National Dog Population Management and Rabies Control Project, launched in 2009, sought to alleviate Bhutan's stray dog problem. The program has sterilized and vaccinated over 150,000 stray dogs and microchipped 32,000 pet dogs with the help of the global animal charity Humane Society International (HSI).
A Huge Stray Dog Population Challenge
An estimated 300 million stray dogs in Asia suffer issues such as malnutrition, parasite infections, untreated ailments, road traffic injuries, and transmissible malignancies. These dogs are frequently subjected to direct persecution and brutal culling. Bhutan's excellent efforts serve as a model for resolving this widespread problem.
The Importance Of Vaccination And Sterilization
Effective stray dog sterilization and vaccination are critical to preventing an increase in dog bites and the transmission of rabies. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), rabies kills roughly 59,000 people worldwide each year, with the majority of cases caused by dog bites. Many Asian governments have previously used harsh techniques to handle street dogs, such as culling and mass sheltering.
Oral Rabies Vaccination Is Recommended By UN Organizations
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Health Organization (WHO), and World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) have all recommended that dogs receive oral rabies vaccination (ORV). This strategy is thought to be more effective in targeted extermination operations, especially for regional wildlife populations.
Customization And Difficulties
Traditional injectable vaccines have been utilized for bulk dog vaccinations, but ORV opens up novel possibilities. However, adopting ORV in middle- and low-income African and Asian countries presents its own set of obstacles. The UN recommends incorporating ORV into national rabies control efforts and customizing programs to each country's resources and socio-cultural considerations.
A Global Objective For 2030
Countries can strengthen their efforts to reduce dog-mediated rabies and strive toward the global goal of zero dog-mediated human rabies deaths by 2030 by implementing these guidelines. Bhutan's success serves as a model for humane and effective stray dog population management and rabies control.
