Description

The NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) is set to help researchers better understand how changes in Earth's forest and wetland ecosystems affect the global carbon cycle and climate change.

About NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR)

  • NISAR is a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) observatory jointly developed by NASA and ISRO.

  • It is a satellite the size of an SUV that weighs 2,800 kilograms.

  • It consists of both L-band and S-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) instruments, making it a dual-frequency radar satellite.

  • NISAR will be the first satellite mission to use two different radar frequencies (L-band and S-band) to measure changes in our planet's surface.

  • SAR can penetrate clouds and collect data day and night, regardless of weather conditions. NASA provided the L-band radar, GPS, a high-capacity solid-state recorder to store data, and a payload data subsystem. ISRO provided the S-band radar, GSLV launch system, and spacecraft.

  • It also consists of a large 11-meter-long fixed antenna reflector, made of gold-plated wire mesh, which will be used to “focus the radar signals transmitted and received from the ascending feeder onto the instrument structure.

Objectives of the Mission

  • It will measure changes in Earth's ecosystems, dynamic surfaces, and ice masses and provide information on biomass, natural hazards, sea level rise, and groundwater.

  • NISAR will observe Earth's land and ice surfaces around the world at 12-day intervals during ascending and descending passages.
