Description
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru has partnered with the American electronic design automation company Synopsys to develop the India Semiconductor Workforce Development Programme (ISWDP). The program intends to alleviate the labor shortfall in the semiconductor industry, which is critical to the powering of today's digital technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum computing.
To meet the nation's semiconductor growth targets, India would require approximately 5,000 engineers with fundamental and advanced skill sets across all sectors. There is not only a labor shortage, but also supply chain and manufacturing concerns. Numerous businesses and the country as a whole stand to benefit substantially from the training of more semiconductor development professionals.
The curriculum for the program will be well-defined, with four levels catering to students and industry experts. It will cover fundamental ideas as well as go in-depth on device and technology development abilities. According to an official announcement from the IISc, Bengaluru, trainees will acquire hands-on experience in a microelectronics lab and have access to cutting-edge research tools.
The program's highlights include 2D/3D process and device simulations, semiconductor device fabrication, calibration, and experiment design and simulation training. These components will address the semiconductor industry's various complexities.
Professor G Rangarajan, the director of IISc, emphasized the institution's dedication to nation-building and the need of partnership between academia and industry.
Professor Rangarajan said, "IISc has a long history of contributing to nation-building, and this partnership is yet another step in that direction. As an institution, we believe that it is imperative for academia and industry to join hands in such key areas. We are excited to contribute to this initiative of growing India's semiconductor technology development and manufacturing leadership."
Raja Subramaniam, Synopsys India's country head and vice president of Applications Engineering, emphasized the country's potential in outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) and manufacturing technologies.
He added, "India is on the cusp of evolving into a powerhouse in outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) and manufacturing technologies."
