The Indian government has launched a Standards and Labeling Programme for solar panels in order to help citizens make educated decisions when purchasing and installing solar photovoltaic modules, also known as solar panels.
Objective
The program's goal is to offer consumers with critical information to assist them in selecting efficient solar panels.
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has developed a PV (Photovoltaic) module star labeling scheme that will be in force from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2025.
There will be no labeling fee during this time.
Consumer Empowerment and Renewable Energy Promotion
The program empowers consumers by allowing them to compare the efficiency of various solar panel brands, hence increasing market competition.
It is consistent with the government's overarching goal of increasing the share of renewable energy and lowering GDP emission intensity by 45% by 2030.
Voluntary Program with Compulsory Implementation in the Future
The program is initially elective for the first two years, after which it may become mandatory.
The government encourages module makers to apply for star labeling accreditation.
The purpose is to promote high-quality 100% Made in India solar PV modules.
Environmental Impact and Efficiency Improvements
The program aims to increase the efficiency of solar PV modules by 2% over current levels.
Improved efficiency is predicted to boost power generation by 33GWh/year and mitigate roughly 27,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.
On a typical 10 square-meter roof area, upgrading from a 1-Star to a 2-Star solar panel could result in a 12% increase in electricity generation.
Product Differentiation Promotion
The program aims to differentiate solar products in a market where they are already commoditized.
It assists consumers in making educated decisions by distinguishing between different models of solar panels.
The effort seeks to ensure that only high-quality, efficient panels are approved by the government.
Creating a Long-Term Solar Industry
The long-term strategy of the government includes manufacturing PV cells and wafers in India in order to reach 100% Made in India solar panels.
Over time, less efficient panels will be removed from the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM).
It underlines India's goal of achieving the greatest quality in solar panels and product performance.
Existing Labeling System
Currently, 15 appliances are subject to required labeling, which means they cannot be sold in the market without the label.
Furthermore, 19 appliances are currently in the voluntary regime, where market development is ongoing.
