The INS Sagardhwani, an oceanographic research vessel owned by the DRDO's Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), set out from South Jetty, Southern Naval Command (SNC), Kochi on October 12.
Promote Scientific Collaboration
The DRDO's Sagar Maitri initiative aims to promote closer socio-economic cooperation and improve scientific interactions between countries in the Indian Ocean Rim (IOR), particularly in the field of ocean research.
Under this initiative, DRDO has introduced 'MAITRI', which stands for 'Marine and Allied Interdisciplinary Training and Research Initiative'.
This initiative focuses on initiating long-term partnerships with IOR countries in the field of "Ocean Research and Development", as stated by the Ministry of Defense in an official statement.
A Historical Journey
In the Sagar Maitri programme, INS Sagardhwani will follow in the footsteps of INS Kistna, which took part in the International Indian Ocean Expedition between 1962 and 1965. The aim of the mission is to establish sustainable scientific partnerships and collaborations with eight countries of the IOR , including Oman, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Myanmar.
Previous Missions
The Sagar Maitri Initiative has conducted previous missions such as visits to Yangon (Myanmar) in April 2019, Klang (Malaysia) in August 2019 and Singapore in September 2019. These missions included one-day scientific seminars in the three countries. In February 2020, NPOL conducted oceanographic studies in the Southern Indian Ocean as part of the third mission (SM-3).
Collaborative Research Aboard INS Sagardhwani
The current SM-4 mission includes scientific operations aboard INS Sagardhwani in the North Arabian Sea and the launch of joint research programs with the Department of Marine Sciences & Fisheries at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman. These missions provide scientists with the opportunity to collaborate and develop close working relationships with their IOR colleagues studying the oceans.
INS Sagardhwani – A Search Symbol
INS Sagardhwani, a marine acoustics research vessel developed by NPOL in Kochi and built by GRSE Ltd. built on site, was launched in July 1994. The NPOL has been actively involved in the study of the marine environment and related fields. Over the past 25 years, the ship has participated in numerous oceanographic observation and research missions, making it a symbol of oceanographic research in India.
