After announcing plans to replace the National Education Policy (NEP) with its own state-level education policy, the Karnataka government has formed an expert committee to draft the policy. A 15-member committee, as well as an additional group of eight subject experts/advisers, have been formed to work on developing the State Education Policy. Professor Sukhdev Thorat, a prominent educationist, economist, professor, writer, and former UGC chairman, will chair the committee.
Professor S Japhet, founding director of the UGC-sponsored Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEEIP), Dr Sudhir Krishnaswamy, vice chancellor of National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Dr Sharat AnanthaMurthy, professor, School of Physics, University of Hyderabad, A Narayana, professor at Azim Premji University, and others are on the committee. Dr Bhagyavana S Mudigoudra, special officer, Department of Higher Education, will serve as the commission's Member Secretary, coordinating and maintaining the meeting's proceedings.

The commission's report must be submitted by February 28, 2024.
Commending the expert committee for its effort in creating the Karnataka State Education Policy, chief minister Siddaramaiah said in a post on social media platform 'X', "A committee has been established, under the chairmanship of Prof Sukhdev Thorat, to prepare the draft of the Karnataka State Education Policy. I am confident that this committee will provide suitable recommendations for nurturing scientific temperament, intellectual growth, and necessary education for the holistic development of students."
The Department of State Educational Research and Training (DSERT) and the Karnataka State Higher Education Council (KSHEC), Bengaluru, will provide the commission with the necessary support and administrative / secretarial assistance. Members of the panel will be paid TA/DA in accordance with existing Government of Karnataka guidelines, according to news agency PTI. The Departments of School Education and Literacy and Higher Education shall select nodal officers to make the required preparations for the commission's meetings, travel, boarding, and accommodation.
