Description
The Maharashtra government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Victoria and Albert Museum in London to loan the state a medieval weapon known as the "wagh nakh" for three years. The wagh nakh, which translates as "tiger claws," is a medieval claw-like dagger popular throughout the Indian subcontinent. Its curved blades were used for personal defense or stealth attacks.
Significance of Wagh Nakh in the Legend of Shivaji
The most famous use of wagh nakh in history is associated with the assassination of Afzal Khan by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Afzal Khan, a general of the Adil Shahi sultanate of Bijapur, was sent to subdue Shivaji, who had become increasingly assertive in the 1950s.
During a dangerous encounter, Shivaji used the hidden wagh nakh to defend himself when Afzal Khan tried to stab him. Khan was mortally wounded and Shivaji's army emerged victorious.
The Wagh Nakh Journey to London
The wagh nakh was brought to Britain by James Grant Duff (1789-1858), an officer of the East India Company, who served as a resident company in the Satara State from 1818 to 1822.
Duff had a suitable case made for the weapon and wrote details of its historical significance on it.
Return of the Wagh Nakh and Colonial Artefacts
The return of the wagh nakh is part of a larger trend in which countries seek the repatriation of cultural and historical relics taken away during the colonial era.
Museums in Europe and other Western countries have come under scrutiny for possessing objects acquired through colonial looting.
While the return of the wagh nakh is temporary, it reflects growing recognition of the colonial past and calls for the repatriation of important artifacts.
