The Indian Air Force (IAF) has announced intentions to retire its legendary MiG-21 fighter jets and replace them with the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mark 1A as part of its continuous efforts to modernize and replace its aged Russian-origin aircraft. This crucial announcement was made by Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari during a news conference in Delhi ahead of the Air Force Day celebrations on October 8th in Prayagraj.
The Transition from MiG-21 to LCA Mark 1A
Air Marshal VR Chaudhari announced that the IAF has signed a contract for 83 LCA Mark 1A aircraft, which will be complemented by another 97 units, taking the total number to 180 LCA Mark 1A aircraft. This decision represents a crucial step towards the gradual withdrawal of aging MiG-21 squadrons from active service. The Air Chief Marshal confirmed that the MiG-21 fighter jets will cease operations by 2025 and that the LCA Mark 1A is the replacement of choice.
Gradual Replacement
The IAF plan envisages a phased approach to replacing MiG-21 squadrons with Mark 1A LCAs. According to Air Marshal Chaudhari, the process has already begun with the second squadron expected to be decommissioned soon and the third to follow next year. The introduction of the LCA Mark 1A will serve as an important bridge to fill the operational void left by the outgoing MiG-21s.

The MiG-21 has been an integral part of the Indian Air Force for over six decades. During the press conference, it was announced that the legendary MiG-21 would take part in what could be its last flyby anywhere in the world. Although the MiG-21 has a long and illustrious service history, it has also faced safety issues, with several accidents occurring in recent years. Celebrating the 91st Anniversary of the IAF
The Indian Air Force will celebrate its 91st anniversary on October 8 under the motto “IAF – Airpower Beyond Boundaries”. This year's air show will be held at Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh where the IAF will showcase the diversity of its air force. The event will feature more than 120 aircraft of various types, from historic aircraft such as the Tigermoth and Harvard to newly introduced aircraft such as the C-295. Additionally, the IAF plans to involve over 20,000 school children in the flying demonstration to reach out to young minds and inspire future aviators.
