The Indian Air Force (IAF) is making considerable steps toward improving its air defense capabilities with the upcoming induction of indigenous Astra Beyond Visual Range (BVR) Air-to-Air Missiles. The IAF has signed contracts for these advanced missiles with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a critical step toward lowering import dependency and enhancing national security.
Induction of Astra-MK1
The first batch of Astra-MK1 missiles, developed by the Defense Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), Research Center Imarat (RCI), and other DRDO laboratories, is expected to be inducted by the end of 2023. BDL has already received the approval for mass production of Astra-MK1 missiles, marking an important milestone in domestic missile production.
Successful Integration and Testing
Astra missiles have been successfully integrated into the SU-30MKI aircraft, demonstrating their compatibility and effectiveness. In a remarkable achievement, the missile was launched from the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas off the coast of Goa, reaching an altitude of 6,000 metres. This successful test underlines the capabilities of the missile and its readiness for operational deployment.
Astra-MK2 Improvements
Development efforts are underway for the more advanced Astra-MK2, with extended range capability. Static launch tests were conducted, indicating that progress has been made in the development of this long-awaited variant of the missile. The Astra-MK2 is poised to further enhance the air combat capabilities of the IAF, thereby strengthening India's position in the global defense arena.
Reduction in Import Dependence
IAF officials expressed satisfaction with Astra's performance and highlighted its potential to become the mainstay of the IAF's BVR missile arsenal. By relying on domestic manufacturing, India aims to significantly reduce import dependency, ensure self-sufficiency in defense technologies and strengthen national security.
Financial Investments and Stipulation of Contracts
In May 2022, the Ministry of Defense signed a contract worth Rs 2,971 crore with BDL for supply of Astra MK-I missiles and associated equipment for the IAF and Navy. This financial investment underlines the government's commitment to strengthening the country's defense capabilities and promoting domestic defense production.
