Description
Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) researchers have made an amazing discovery: a new species of marine tardigrade. This small organism, named Batillipes kalami, was discovered off the southeast coast of Tamil Nadu, and was named after the late former Indian President and renowned scientist, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
Regarding Tardigrades
The tiny animals known as tardigrades, also known as "water bears," are renowned for their minuscule size and resilience. They are amazing survivors, surviving desiccation, freezing temperatures, and even the vacuum of space, making them fascinating creatures.
The Characteristics of Batillipes Kalami
Batillipes kalami is not just any tardigrade. Being the second marine tardigrade species to be identified in Indian waters and the first on the east coast, it has earned its distinction. This species has a trapezoid-shaped head with filament-like appendages, and it averages 170 micrometers in length. It has four sets of legs, each with a different length sensory spine.
A Tribute to Late Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
The species name, Batillipes kalami, is significant. It honors the late Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, a well-known scientist and former President of India. The decision to name this new species of tardigrade after Dr. Kalam's hometown of Rameswaram is reflected in the choice of name. Dr. Kalam's continued dedication to science and technology is highlighted by this honor.
We Are Learning More About Marine Tardigrades
Not only is Batillipes kalami a new species, but it also expands our understanding of the diversity of marine tardigrades on the Indian subcontinent. In order to learn more about the mysterious world of these microorganisms, it emphasizes the value of thorough research along the Indian coastline. Increased public awareness of India's scientific advancements and marine biodiversity is another benefit of this naming.
The Difficulties in Researching Marine Tardigrades
Scientists face particular difficulties studying marine tardigrades. They require specialized microscopic techniques for observation and analysis because they are even smaller than their terrestrial counterparts. Furthermore, the taxonomy of marine tardigrades, particularly those found in Indian waters, is still largely unknown, calling for additional study and taxonomic descriptions to shed light on these fascinating organisms.
