The New India Foundation (NIF) has begun accepting applications for the second round of NIF Translation Fellowships for the 2024 academic year. The deadline to apply for the scholarship online is December 31. The NIF Translation Fellowship aims to encourage nonfiction translations from regional Indian languages into English.
The NIF Translation Fellowships aim to highlight India's rich past through its various languages and literary expertise traditions. The first round of NIF Translation Fellowships has been given to Bangla, Kannada, and Marathi, with publications scheduled for 2025. According to an NIF official statement, these three translations will supplement the 32 works already published under the New India Foundation's administration through the flagship Book Fellowship program.
The Translation Fellowships aim to broaden the NIF's purpose of sponsoring research and writing on all aspects of Independent India, it stated.
Translators have been asked to submit proposals for ten Indian languages: Assamese, Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Odia, Tamil, and Urdu. Each language will be assigned a language expert from the NIF's language expert committee. To ensure the highest standards of selection and support, the expert committee would be composed of notable Indian authors and researchers.
The Fellowship for the 2024 session will be awarded based on the text chosen, the quality of the translation, and the overall project proposal.
The Translation Fellowships will be offered to translators/writers working on bringing historical Indian-language writings to English publishing over a six-month term. Each recipients will receive a stipend of six lakh rupees. Fellows are required to publish their translated works, which will be an extension of their winning submissions, by the end of the year.
