Description
The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) awarded Vijayawada Railway Station for its efforts to raise environmental standards and offer eco-friendly services to passengers by awarding it the highest rating of Platinum for a "Green Railway Station." The ratings for the station have improved, moving from gold in 2019 to platinum in 2023.
The use of star-rated electrical appliances, LED lighting, the installation of a sewage treatment plant to recycle wastewater, periodic testing to check smoke emissions, increasing green coverage, improving passenger amenities, providing medical facilities, placing buildings close to bus stops, avoiding single-use plastics, and using thorough mechanized cleaning for efficient waste segregation and disposal are a few of these measures.
Railway Stations' Greenness Rating System
A voluntary initiative called the IGBC-CII Green Railway Stations Rating System seeks to make it easier for train stations to adopt green ideas. The system aids in addressing national priorities like waste management, energy efficiency, reduced use of fossil fuels, and less reliance on virgin materials, as well as water conservation and efficiency. The rating system aids in the understanding of the station management's current position with regard to the station's "green performance" and the steps that must be taken to continuously improve the performance.
To encourage the adoption of green ideas and improve the commuter experience overall, the IGBC developed the Green Railway Stations rating system with the help of the Environment Directorate of Indian Railways.
A sustainable station facility, health, hygiene, and sanitation, energy efficiency, water efficiency, smart and green initiatives, and innovation and development are among the six environmental categories that make up the rating system as set forth by the IGBC.

Energy efficient methods include 5-star-rated electrical equipment, LED fixtures, BLDC fans, daylight sensors, energy monitoring, and solar water heaters. WiFi, smart card ticketing, food courts, pharmacies, and innovative solutions such as the Centre for Advanced Maintenance Technology (CAMTECH) design coach watering are examples of smart and green projects.
