National Film Award Winners

Each year, the National Film Awards serve as a symbol of honor for Indian cinema. The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting's Directorate of Film Festivals oversees the National Film Awards. In order to demonstrate the power of cinema as a medium of both art and impact, they honor films that demonstrate not only aesthetic and technical excellence but also social relevance.

The National Film Awards' History

In 1954, the National Film Awards debuted under the name "State Awards". The only films nominated and recognized at the time were the best in each region's language. It began recognizing actors and crew members who contributed to the films in 1967. For her role in Raat Aur Din, Nargis was the first actor to receive the Best Actress Award. Uttam Kumar received the Best Actor Award for his work with Antony Firingee and Chiriyakhana.

The National Film Awards have come a long way since the first prizes were given for the movies of 1953. The number of awards has grown over time. For the first six years, it was customary to present the Regional Best Award to the National Best Film, which were originally known as "State Awards," and included two President's Gold Medals, two certificates of merit, and silver medals for twelve regional films. The number of awards has grown over time.

The first actress and actor to win the Best Actress (then called Urvashi) and Best Actor (then called Bharat) Awards, respectively, were Nargis Dutt and Uttam Kumar, in 1968 for the movies of 1967. Separate awards for artists and technicians were also established at that time.

The awards are given in three sections, namely, Features, Non-Features and Best Writing on Cinema.

The "Best Writing on Cinema" section focuses on promoting the study and appreciation of cinema as an art form and the dissemination of information and critical appreciation of the art form through the publication of various books, articles, reviews, newspaper coverage, and studies. Selection of the winners in Features and Non-Features is recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements in various categories.

The Awards are intended to encourage the creation of films that are both artistically and technically excellent and socially relevant, thereby fostering the understanding and appreciation of the various cultural traditions throughout the country in cinematic form. The jury, which is made up of notable figures in the humanities, other related arts, and the film industry, selects the award winners.
