About Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL)
Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) is an Indian government-owned company in the oil and gas industry. It is controlled by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and operates three refineries in Bina, Kochi, and Mumbai. BPCL is the second-largest government-owned oil producer in India and was ranked among the top 500 public sector undertakings in the world in 2020. It is also listed on Forbes's Global 2000 list for 2021.
The company was nationalized in 1976 under the Act on the Nationalization of Foreign Oil Companies ESSO (1974), Burma Shell (1976), and Caltex (1977). The government took over Burmah Shell on January 24, 1976, and renamed it Bharat Refineries Limited. On August 1, 1977, it was further renamed Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited. This company was also the first to process crude oil from the Mumbai High Field.
