Scientists have discovered a new species, the Antarctic Strawberry Feather Star, at the depths of the Antarctic Ocean. This strange species, which has a peculiar body structure and 20 arms, was discovered during research missions between 2008 and 2017. The new species was discovered while scientists were trawling the Antarctic Ocean using nets on a research vessel.
The discovery, which was published in the journal Invertebrate Systematics on July 14, startled researchers who were looking for cryptic marine creatures known as Antarctic feather stars. These organisms, which live at depths ranging from 65 to 65,000 feet, exhibit unusual swimming habits.
Promachocrinus fragarious, the newly discovered species, was called by its strawberry-like body and ability to change color from purplish to dark reddish. Researchers discovered it at depths ranging from 215 to 3,840 feet in the Southern Ocean. Its arm arrangement, appendages, and triangular body form are notable traits.
