Description
The Indian Air Force has received its latest Heron Mark 2 drones, which have strike capabilities and can conduct border surveillance with both China and Pakistan in a single sortie. Four new Heron Mark-2 drones, capable of carrying long-range missiles and other armament systems, have been deployed to a forward air base in the northern sector.
The Heron Mark-2's induction significantly improves the IAF's surveillance capability. The drone will be utilized for a range of tasks such as information gathering, border patrol, and counter-insurgency operations. It will also support the IAF's combat aircraft by delivering real-time images and targeting data.
About Heron Mark-2 Drone
The Heron Mark-2 is an improved version of the Heron Mark-1, which has been in IAF service since 2009. The new drone has a greater range and endurance, as well as more modern sensors.
The Heron Mark-2 is a Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance (MALE) drone with a maximum range of 3,000 kilometers and a 24-hour endurance. It has a synthetic aperture radar (SAR), an electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) camera, and a laser designator among other sensors. The SAR camera can image targets in all weather conditions, day or night, and the EO/IR camera can identify and track targets. Targets for precision strikes can be designated using the laser designator.
The Heron Mark-2 also has a datalink, which allows it to provide real-time imagery and data to ground control stations. The IAF now has a huge advantage in the battlespace since it can track and target enemy units in real time.
