Description

First female pilot in India, Sarla Thukral was a trailblazer renowned for her outstanding accomplishments in the arts, business, and aviation. She was instrumental in removing gender boundaries and creating a lasting impression in a number of industries.

Personal Details Of Sarla Thukral

Sarla Thukral, who was born in 1914, earned her aviation pilot's license at age 21 and began solo Gypsy Moth flights. She persisted and managed to fly for the Lahore Flying Club for a thousand hours. Her dreams were bolstered when she married P.D. Sharma at age 16, who came from a family of nine pilots.

Flight Accomplishments

The life of Sarla Thukral is one of bravery and tenacity. Sarla was a pioneer in aviation while her husband, P.D. Sharma, made history by being the first Indian to possess an airmail pilot's certificate. She created history at a period when few women ventured to fly. One of the first Indian women to obtain an 'A' license was Sarla.

Tragedy Occurs

Sadly, Sarla experienced tragedy when her husband, P.D. Sharma, died in a plane disaster in 1939. She found this to be a tragic occurrence. Sarla held onto her dreams despite her sadness. She wanted to be a commercial pilot, but when World War II started, her aspirations were put on hold. Training in civil aviation was halted during this period.

Sarla Thukral's Life Takes A New Direction

Sarla made the decision to follow a different route because she had obligations to raise her child and needed to provide for herself. She focused on her creative side now. She attended the Mayo School of Art after traveling back to Lahore. She discovered the Bengal School of Painting here, where her talent grew. She obtained a diploma in fine arts as a result of her perseverance.

Legacy

The example of Sarla Thukral shows us that adversity cannot quench tenacity. She demonstrated that it is possible to change course despite obstacles. Despite being unable to fulfill her ambition of becoming a commercial pilot, she achieved great success in the arts. Her experience serves as a reminder that even though our journey may take unforeseen detours, we can still accomplish incredible things if we are resilient.
