The Kerala government is taking proactive steps to speed up the registration process and introduce a unique identification system for migrant workers in the state. In response to the recent sexual crimes allegedly perpetrated by migrant labor against children, the government has launched the “Athidhi Portal”. This user-friendly portal aims to simplify the registration of "guest workers" and ensure their social security.
Improved Registration Process And Security
The Athidhi Portal, a new initiative of the Kerala government, is scheduled to be launched on August 7, 2023. Its main goal is to speed up the registration process of migrant workers, especially after two horrific sexual crimes against minors. One such incident involved the abduction, rape, and murder of a 5-year-old girl in Aluva, Ernakulam district, believed to have been carried out by a migrant worker from Bihar. The State is determined to strengthen measures to protect vulnerable people and protect their rights.
Support Guest Workers Through The Help Desk
To ensure that no guest workers are excluded from the portal, the Kerala government plans to set up help desks at train stations, where guest workers often arrive in large numbers. These help desks will provide valuable support to workers, guiding them through the application process and ensuring they are included in the system.
Statewide Rollout And Employee Registration
The Athidhi portal will launch statewide on August 7 and is expected to streamline guest worker registration across the state. Contractors and employers will play an important role in registering workers on the portal, ensuring that all necessary information is entered correctly. The registrar will then carefully review the details provided and issue a unique piece of identification to each worker. This identification system will help track workers and facilitate efficient management of their records.
Ensuring Social Security Of Migrant Workers
The Athidhi portal does more than simply speed up the registration process. It is designed to collect important information about migrant workers to ensure they have access to social security measures. By creating a unique identification system, the portal helps protect workers' rights and gives them a sense of security in an unfamiliar environment.
