Description

Bratya Dasgupta, West Bengal Education Minister, stated on August 9, that a student has the right to choose their first language and that the state government will not interfere with that decision. Dasgupta told reporters that the second and third languages will be chosen depending on the demographic and ethnic makeup of the area.

"A student is free to choose the first language. In Kolkata, you can choose Bengali as the first language. In the Darjeeling hills, you can choose Nepali as the first language if you wish," he said. "In certain regions of the state, a student can choose Alchiki or Rajbanshi as the first language. You can also opt for Urdu as the first language," he added.

He went on to say that the administration does not want Bengali to be forced as a second language. The second and third languages will be chosen by demographic factors such as population distribution and ethnicity.

Students In West Bengal To Learn 3 Languages, Bengali To Be Priority

The board will execute the suggestions of the state education policy in schools, and the university will implement them in colleges. Class 10 final exams are administered by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and class 12 final exams are administered by the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WCCHE).

Students in Classes 5-8 would be required to master three languages, the first of which is Bengali, under the new West Bengal education policy. At the elementary level, students will be taught two languages, the first of which will be their mother tongue.

The third language could be either local or regional, as well as foreign, however the Bengali, Sanskrit, or Hindi languages would be prioritized. The policy's major goal is to teach the Bengali language to West Bengal's youngsters.
