Description
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has recently launched the Amrit Brikshya Andolan online portal and mobile application, as well as the Wood-based Industry (WBI) registration web page. The effort seeks to have a substantial influence on the green economy of the state by planting 1 crore (10 million) commercially viable seedlings across the state.
Planting 1 Crore Saplings
On September 17, 2023, the Amrit Brikshya Andolan sets an ambitious goal of planting 1 crore seedlings by people from all walks of life. This campaign is in response to the widespread destruction of forests around the world, which is one of the biggest contributors to global warming.
Participant Incentives
The government has introduced incentives for individuals who register and plant seedlings in order to stimulate involvement. Those who register via the Amrit Brikshya Andolan app or online and upload geo-tagged images of their sapling planting will receive Rs 100 deposited into their bank account. Furthermore, if the seedlings live for three years, the individual will receive an additional Rs 200.
Future Objectives
In the future, the Assam government intends to extend its sapling planting initiatives. The goal for the coming year is to plant 3 crore commercially viable saplings, and the goal for 2025 is to plant 5 crore saplings. These ambitious goals demonstrate the government's dedication to increasing the state's green cover and protecting biodiversity.
Assam Wood-based Industries (Promotion & Development) Rules 2022
The Chief Minister also announced the Assam Wood-based Industries (Promotion & Development) Rules 2022, in addition to the Amrit Brikshya Andolan. This replaces the previous Assam Wood-based Industries (Establishment & Regulation) Rules, which were enacted in 2000. The new guidelines are intended to help indigenous wood-based companies expand by removing barriers created by prior laws.
Benefiting Agarwood Growers
The new laws have been especially advantageous to Assam's agarwood growers. They now enable for the manufacturing of agar oil in home-based systems, giving producers in upper Assam a substantial advantage. This measure is likely to increase the income of farmers who cultivate agarwood.
