Description

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was India's first Education Minister after independence. His birthday, November 11th, is observed as 'National Education Day.' He was also a teacher, a freedom fighter, a politician, and a journalist. 

Maulana Azad was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1992.

  • Name: Abul Kalam Ghulam Muhiyuddin Ahmed Bin Khairuddin Al-Hussaini Azad (Maulana Azad)

  • Birth Date: 11th November 1888

  • Birth Place: Mecca, Hejaz (Saudi Arabia)

  • Death: 22nd February 1958 at Delhi, India

Early Days

Azad began his career as a journalist in his early years. He became involved in revolutionary activities in 1905 after being introduced to them by notable Hindu revolutionary Aurobindo Ghosh and Shyam Sundar Chakravarty. He traveled to Turkey, Syria, France, and Egypt in 1908, where he met various revolutionaries and became a vocal opponent of both the British government and Muslim politicians.

Indian National Congress

Maulana Azad joined the Indian National Congress and backed the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1920. He was also chosen to be the president of the All India Khilafat Committee. Shortly after, in 1923, he became the Indian National Congress's youngest president. In 1924, Azad presided over the Delhi University Conference and used his position to urge for the unity of Khilafat and Swarajist leaders under the unified flag of the Congress.

Works Done As A First Education Minister Of India

Maulana Azad, India's first education minister from 1947 to 1958, implemented the following reforms:

  • He thought that everyone deserved the basic right to education and hence provided free and obligatory primary education for all children up to the age of 14.

  • In 1935, Maulana Azad founded the Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi, as well as the IITs, IISc, and the School of Planning and Architecture.

  • He also helped to establish new educational institutions and was a key figure in the establishment of India's higher education authority, the University Grants Commission.
