Description

India produced nine Nobel laureates in all between 1913 and 2023. Rabindranath Tagore became the first Indian to get this esteemed award in 1913, when it was bestowed upon him for his exquisitely beautiful, innovative, and deeply sympathetic verse.

The Nobel Prize's History

The Nobel Prize was established in 1901 in remembrance of Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel. This important award is typically given in six fields: literature, physics, chemistry, economics, science, peace, and physiology or medicine.

When Alfred Nobel died in 1896, he left his estate to be utilized for the formation of rewards known as "Nobel Prizes" in his will. The Nobel Prize was first given out in 1901. Sveriges Riksbank, Sweden's central bank, supported the foundation of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1968. Since then, the Nobel Prizes have been granted in six different fields.

List Of Indian Nobel Prize Winners

Rabindranath Tagore was the first Indian Nobel winner, receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. Abhijit Banerjee, the most recent Indian Nobel laureate, received the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2019. Indian Nobel laureates have made major contributions to literature, physics, chemistry, medicine, peace, and economics, among other subjects. Their work has contributed to the advancement of knowledge and understanding in various domains, as well as having a good impact worldwide.

1. Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for his profoundly sensitive, fresh, and beautiful verse. Tagore, also known as the Bard of Bengal and Gurudev, is one of India's most dignified individuals. Rabindranath Tagore was the first Indian to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

2. CV Raman

Sir Chandrashekhar Venkata Raman, also known as CV Raman, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for his work on light scattering and the discovery of the effect named after him. The "Raman Effect" is another name for his discovery. He is one of India's greatest Nobel Prize winners.

3. Har Govind Khurana

Har Govind Khurana, Marshall W. Nirenberg, and Robert W. Holley were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1968 for their understanding of the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis. H.G.Khurana is a biochemist who is Indian-American. His studies focused on the production of functional genes outside of live organisms.

4. Mother Teresa

In 1979, Mother Teresa became the first Indian woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Her birthplace is the Republic of Macedonia. She travelled to India at the age of 19 and spent the remainder of her life there as a Roman Catholic nun and missionary serving the "poorest of the poor" in city slums. Her humanitarian work resulted in the formation of the Missionaries of Charity.

5. Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar

Subrahmanyam Chandrasekhar received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1983 for his theoretical analyses of physical processes relevant to the structure and evolution of stars. He is a mathematician of Indo-American origin. His invention refers to the discovery of the physical process involved in star evolution.

6. Amartya Sen

Amartya Sen received the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1998 for his contributions to welfare economics. He was born in the British Indian town of Manikganj. Sen studied economics and taught it in a number of prestigious universities in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

7. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009 for his work on the structure and function of the ribosome. The Royal Swedish Academy of Services bestows the Nobel Prize.

8. Kailash Satyarthi

Kailash Satyarthi was born in Madhya Pradesh and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 for his fight against the oppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to an education. He is an activist who has committed his entire life to bringing children's rights and education into the spotlight.

9. Abhijit Banerjee

Abhijit Banerjee is an Indo-American who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2019. He shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with his wife Esther Duflo and Harvard University's Michel Kremer.
