Through joint military exercises and arms deals, China and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have made gains in expanding their defense and security ties. The Falcon Shield 2023 exercise, for example, is set to take place in China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous province.
Falcon Shield 2023: Goals And Details
The Falcon Shield 2023 military exercise intends to improve pragmatic interactions and collaboration between the Chinese and UAE forces, as well as to develop mutual understanding and trust. The Chinese defense ministry, however, has not provided exact details about the size of the UAE contingent, the duration of the training, or its scope.
The Location Of Joint Military Exercises In Xinjiang
In the past, Xinjiang has been a popular location for joint military exercises. In 2016, the region hosted collaborative military training with Chinese infantry forces and other members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) bloc. The exercise aimed to improve fighting capabilities, military communication, and ability to deal with security challenges efficiently.
UAE Participation And Defense Arsenal
The UAE Air Force is predominantly equipped with Western fighter jets such as F-16s and Mirage-2000s. However, the country has shown a desire to diversify its arsenal by including Chinese-made weapons. China sent at least five Wing Loong I drones to the UAE in 2011, and Abu Dhabi became the first export customer for the Wing Loong II drones in 2017.
China's L15 Advanced Trainer Jet Export
In February 2023, China officially confirmed an agreement to supply the L15 advanced trainer jet to the UAE. The L15 is a new generation of multifunctional light attack and combat trainer jets capable of educating pilots of fourth and fifth-generation fighter jets while performing crucial air-to-air combat and land attack missions.
Defense Cooperation Between China And The UAE And Regional Geopolitics
China's rising involvement in the UAE's defense sector has alarmed US authorities, as it indicates the possibility of deeper connections between the two countries. Despite being a traditional US ally, the UAE's participation in military exercises and arms transactions with China suggests a shift in the regional geopolitical environment.
