The Goa bench of the Bombay High Court recently directed the Goa government to designate the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary and other areas mentioned in National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) communications and plans prepared by the Goa forest department as tiger reserves under the Wildlife Protection Act within three months.
Geography And Biodiversity
The sanctuary is located in the Western Ghats, an environmentally vulnerable region. It is distinguished by heights ranging from 200 meters in the west to 560 meters in the center, encompassing the spectacular Vagheri Hills, including the 560-meter-high Vagheri peak. These hills provide a natural habitat for a variety of wildlife species, and the sanctuary's unique finding of a flowing lake or waterbody shaped like India's map adds to its allure.
The Mhadei River, also known as the Mandovi River downstream, passes through the sanctuary, serving as Goa's lifeline. It begins in Karnataka and traverses 9.4 kilometers via the sanctuary before reaching the Arabian Sea in Panaji after a total journey of 81.2 kilometers in Goa.
Potential Tiger Reserve Status
The sanctuary's amazing biodiversity, as well as the presence of Bengal tigers, has generated discussions of making Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary a Project Tiger reserve. The Bombay High Court ordered the Goa government to declare the sanctuary and certain adjacent territories a tiger reserve in accordance with the Wildlife Protection Act. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has actively advocated for the establishment of this reserve in order to protect the resident tiger population.
