The Miss World Organization has announced that India has been chosen to host its upcoming competition, which will take place later this year.

The Miss World pageant was first held in the United Kingdom in 1951, during the Festival of Britain. Eric Morley, the publicity director of Mecca Limited, a London-based entertainment firm, came up with the idea to incorporate an international beauty contest in the festival. Morley's goal was to increase festival attendance by including an intriguing event on the schedule. 

Controversy Over Bikinis

When the Miss World pageant was first planned, it was intended to judge participants in bikinis, which were becoming a popular beachwear trend at the time. However, objections from countries such as Ireland and Spain to women being assessed in bikinis forced organizers to convert to one-piece bathing suits instead. 

Popularity And Media Exposure

The development of television was critical in propelling the popularity of the Miss World competition. In Britain, the competition became a highly anticipated and extensively viewed event. More viewers tuned in as television coverage increased to witness the crowning of Miss World and the display of beauty and talent. 

Upcoming Miss World Pageant In India

This year, India will once again host the Miss World pageant. Over 130 countries will compete in India to show off their distinct talents, intelligence, and compassion. The event will feature a variety of competitions, including talent shows, sporting challenges, and humanitarian activities. The pageant's grand finale is slated for November/December 2023. 

Previous Indian Winners

India has a long history of success in the Miss World and Miss Universe pageants. Aishwarya Rai was crowned Miss World in 1994, while Sushmita Sen was crowned Miss Universe. Their achievements not only garnered India glory but also expanded the popularity of the pageant within the country.

Concerns were made by critics from various organizations regarding the event's impact on women, cultural values, and the spread of Western principles.
