Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) has begun an ambitious pilot study, becoming India's first Oil Marketing Company to perform extensive research on vehicles that use E27 fuel and Ethanol Blended Diesel Fuel. This program is consistent with the Indian government's ethanol blending strategy, which seeks to attain 20% Ethanol Blended Gasoline (E20) by 2023 and ensure its widespread availability.
Advancing Ethanol Blending
The plan for ethanol blending in India lays out a clear vision for a greener, more sustainable future. The roadmap calls for the launch of E20 material-compliant and E10 engine-tuned vehicles by April 2023, marking a dramatic move toward ethanol blending. This project contributes to the government's goal of lowering carbon emissions and encouraging greener fuels.
Promising Emissions Reduction
Preliminary research on vehicles powered by E27 has revealed significant reductions in emissions, particularly carbon dioxide, as compared to regular gasoline. HPCL's pilot study on E27 fuel intends to evaluate its performance and emissions in engines and cars over a long period of time. Passenger cars will be tested with a 20,000 km target mileage accumulation, allowing for a thorough study of the fuel's efficiency and environmental impact.
Fuel Specification Compliance
HPCL's ethanol trials will carefully comply to IS 1460:2017 fuel criteria, assuring the fuel's quality and compatibility. These experiments will help researchers learn more about the efficacy of E27 fuel and its potential for widespread use in the transport sector.
Continuing The Ethanol Blending Program
India's ethanol blending program has set a target of 27% blending, surpassing the E20 fuel milestone. This progressive approach represents the commitment to decrease reliance on fossil fuels and adopting greener alternatives. HPCL's pilot study on E27 fuel is a first step toward this ambitious target.
HPCL’s Success With E20 Fuel
HPCL successfully released E20 fuel at 23 retail outlets in India in February of this year. With 350 E20 stores across 21 states, the company has already made significant headway in decreasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To date, the usage of E20 fuel has resulted in a 3000 MT reduction in GHG emissions. These figures emphasize the huge environmental impact of switching to ethanol-blended fuels.
