Description

The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) made an intriguing discovery in the seas of Odisha's Ganjam district lately. ZSI scientists discovered a previously unknown species of eel, which they called Pisodonophis kalinga. This astonishing discovery sheds light on the region's high biodiversity and emphasizes the need of conservation efforts.

Species Identification

The name "Pisodonophis kalinga" refers to Odisha's ancient name. The common name "kalinga snake eel" has been offered for this unusual species.

Classification Of Taxonomic

Pisodonophis kalinga is a member of the Ophichthidae family and the Anguilliformes order. These classifications shed light on the evolutionary history and characteristics of this recently found eel species.

Location Of Discovery And Collaborative Efforts

A new species of eel was discovered in Odisha's Ganjam district's Palur canal. This region is famous for its various aquatic environments. The eels were discovered in particular in the Chilika lagoon, which is Asia's largest brackish water lagoon. The collaboration of ZSI, Berhampur University, and Ravenshaw University was critical in this discovery. The teams collaborated to document and research the rare eel species.

Availability During The Monsoon Season

Pisodonophis kalinga was discovered to be prevalent in the region during the monsoon season, which runs from September to November. The eel species prefers these particular climatic circumstances, emphasizing the necessity of recognizing seasonal fluctuations in biodiversity.

Differentiating Pisodonophis Boro From Pisodonophis kalinga

Researchers undertook a thorough analysis to distinguish Pisodonophis kalinga from a similar species known as Pisodonophis boro. They scrutinized details such as the shape of the teeth, the range of vertebrae, and the position of the dorsal fin. These distinguishing traits proved conclusively that Pisodonophis kalinga is a distinct and previously unknown species.

Pisodonophis Knowledge Expansion

The discovery of Pisodonophis kalinga brings the total number of known Pisodonophis species in Indian waters to three. This discovery adds to our understanding of the eel species in the family Ophichthidae, which includes many different species around the world.

Conservation Implications

The discovery of Pisodonophis kalinga emphasizes the significance of biodiversity protection efforts in the region. Scientists can better understand ecological processes and drive conservation activities to protect these unique organisms and their habitats by documenting and studying new species.
