Description

In Goa, India, the National Campaign for Updating and Verifying the People's Biodiversity Register (PBR) was just begun. The Union Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change, the Goa State Biodiversity Board, the National Biodiversity Authority, and the Government of Goa are all involved in this collaborative endeavour. The campaign's goal is to document and save the country's various biological resources.

Documenting And Preserving India's Biodiversity

The National Campaign for Updating and Verifying the PBR's major goal is to build a complete record of India's biodiversity. The programme aims to preserve the country's rich and diverse natural heritage by documenting many aspects of biological variety, such as habitat conservation, land races, folk variants, cultivars, domesticated animals, microorganisms and acquired knowledge. This programme is critical for better understanding, conserving, and encouraging the long-term use of India's biological resources.

The Importance Of Preserving Biodiversity

The preservation of biodiversity is critical for maintaining natural equilibrium. We can secure the sustainability and well-being of both the environment and society by maintaining a delicate balance between ecological systems and human activity. The National Campaign for Updating and Verifying the PBR aims to increase public awareness of the importance of biodiversity conservation and to promote responsible environmental management.

PBR Stands For People's Biodiversity Register

The People's Biodiversity Register (PBR) is a key component of the effort. Local governments in India form Biodiversity Management Committees (BMC), which work with communities to create these registers. The PBR serves as a comprehensive archive of biodiversity information, containing extensive records of various species, their habitats, and traditional biological resource knowledge. These registries are critical in assisting conservation efforts, promoting sustainable resource use, and encouraging community participation in biodiversity protection.

The Legal Framework: The Biological Diversity Act Of 2002

The Biological Diversity Act of 2002 requires the development of Biodiversity Management Committees and the creation of People's Biodiversity Registers. This law sets India's legal basis for biodiversity conservation. It recognises the need of incorporating local communities in conservation activities and encourages them to participate actively through BMCs. The act assures that biodiversity preservation remains a national and local priority.
