The Odisha Millet Mission (OMM) has emerged as a significant endeavour by the Odisha government to reintroduce millet production and provide assistance to farmers in the state. The government has successfully acquired a large amount of ragi or finger millet through this flagship programme, benefiting thousands of farmers.
Over 600,000 Quintals Of Ragi Were Successfully Procured
The Odisha government has reached a significant milestone by purchasing over 600,000 quintals of ragi through the Odisha Millet Mission. This purchase not only provides farmers with a secure outlet for their produce, but it also supports the development of ragi, which contributes to the resurgence of this healthy grain.
Minimum Support Price (MSP) And Districts With High Procurement
Farmers were paid a minimum support price (MSP) of Rupees 3,578 per quintal for their ragi produce. Southern Odisha districts, including Koraput, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Gajapati, and Sundargarh, have reported the largest quantity of ragi procurement under the OMM. This demonstrates the program's success in these areas, as well as the farmers' active participation.
System Of Millet Intensification (SMI) And Improved Yield
To increase ragi yield, farmers have used the System of Millet Intensification (SMI) approach. Ragi was traditionally produced on barren and less productive ground, yielding only 2.5 quintals per acre. Farmers may now harvest 5-6 quintals per acre using the SMI approach. This strategy emphasises endogenous processes and proper plant spacing, resulting in improved microbe population, aeration, and tiller formation.
Collaborative Promotion Of Better Agronomic Practises
Local non-profits, community resource persons, community-based organisations, progressive farmers, Krishak Sathis, and Krishi Vigyan Kendra subject matter specialists have all played important roles in promoting improved agronomic practises among small-scale farmers. Their combined efforts have contributed to increased productivity and crop yield among OMM farmers.
Streamlining Procurement Through MPAS
To streamline the procurement process, the Odisha government has introduced an online system called MPAS (Millet Procurement and Sales). This platform enables efficient management and operation of the procurement process. It also ensures direct benefit transfer within a week of the sale of produce, providing farmers with timely payments directly into their bank accounts.
