Description
Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini has completed a 6-month transoceanic intercontinental expedition, covering 17,000 nautical miles of passage by the time it arrives in Goa on May 24. The ship sailed from Cape Town, South Africa to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as part of the Cape to Rio Race 2023. Tarini faced storms, rough seas, strong winds, and heavy weather conditions during the expedition. Tarini's crew consisted of six officers, including two female officers, who demonstrated spirit, grit, and determination throughout the journey.
INSV Tarini is the Indian Navy's second sailboat, built at the Aquarius Shipyard in Divar, Goa. The ship, named after the Tara Tarini temple, was delivered to the navy on February 18, 2017. The boat is 56 feet long and made of a wood-core and fibreglass sandwich. The boat has six sails, including a mainsail, genoa, stay, downwind, and storm sail, and can sail in extreme conditions.
Importance Of Expedition
The expedition is important because it covered a large distance and enabled the crew to numerous challenges, adding to the Indian Navy's capabilities. The Indian Navy has used expeditions like this to improve the skills of its sailors and raise awareness about oceanic voyages.
Previous Expedition
INSV Tarini is well-known for circumnavigating the globe with an all-female officer crew in the historic Navika Sagar Parikrama expedition, which began in 2017. The six members of Navika Sagar Parikrama travelled 22,000 nautical miles in 254 days, battling rough seas, scorching sun, biting cold, and freezing winds with unwavering spirit.
