Description
A new study has provided crucial information about Mars's deepest layer. The radius of Mars' core is predicted to be between 1,780-1,810 km. According to research published in the journal PNAS, it is most likely liquid.
Mars InSight Lander
A worldwide team of scientists reviewed seismic data obtained by NASA's InSight Mars lander, which was sent into orbit in May 2018, to gain insight into the composition of Mars. The lander deployed a seismometer and other geophysical sensors on the planet's surface. Seismometers detect and quantify seismic waves and shockwaves produced by earthquakes. Seismic waves behave differently when they move through different materials, slowing down when they pass through liquids or hotter areas.
Core Structure Of Mars
According to this study, the lighter elements, sulphur and oxygen, account for around a fifth of the weight of the core. Although both Earth and Mars are largely made of iron, Mars' core is less dense.
Encompassing Land And Sea
By understanding more about Mars' physical features, we can improve simulations of how Earth and Mars formed. It is speculated that Mars was once habitable before evolving into its current state.
