The Defence Ministry has signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to purchase 13 Lynx-U2 fire control systems manufactured in-house. The contract is worth more than Rupees 1,700 crore. It will be installed in new generation offshore patrol vessels built in India by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers and Goa Shipyard Limited.
About Lynx-U2 Fire Control System
To select weapon aiming locations and engage targets, the Lynx-U2 fire control system carefully monitors air/surface targets and outputs target data. For more than two decades, the system has been satisfying the tactical needs of Indian Naval ships of various types, including destroyers, frigates, missile boats, corvettes, and so on.
The Gun Fire Control System (GFCS) is based on an open and scalable framework that enables simple and flexible deployment in a wide range of configurations. For target fighting, medium/short range gun mounts such as the Russian AK176, A190, and AK630, as well as the SRGM (Super Rapid Gun Mount) available onboard ships, are utilized.
Advantages Of Lynx-U2 Fire Control Systems
The Indian Navy will profit from the purchase of Lynx-U2 Fire Control Systems in various ways. For starters, it will improve the navy's capacity to locate and engage targets with more precision, reducing collateral damage. This system is intended to track and engage targets in the presence of marine clutter, a critical obstacle in naval operations. The open and scalable foundation of the system enables easy integration with current systems, enabling smooth interoperability and eliminating operational difficulties.
Second, the procurement of indigenously designed and developed systems will boost the government's 'Make in India' drive by creating job opportunities in the country. This will result in cost savings, technology transfer, and talent development by reducing reliance on foreign OEMs. The Lynx-U2 system has been in service for almost two decades, with a track record of reliability and performance.
