The Sarbat Khalsa, which translates as "all congregation," is a traditional gathering of all Sikh factions (Khalsa) to address political, social, and religious problems of considerable importance to the community. The concept of a deliberative assembly of Sikhs dates back to the 18th century and was held twice a year.
On Baisakhi Day, Who Is Calling For Sarbat Khalsa?
Amritpal Singh has requested that the Akal Takht Jathedar call the Sarbat Khalsa on Baisakhi Day, April 14. The action has piqued the interest of the Sikh community, since the Sarbat Khalsa has been known during pivotal points in Sikh history.
Sarbat Khalsa's Origins And Importance
The word "sarbat" means "all," and the Sarbat Khalsa was an assembly in which all Khalsa members were represented. It was a democratic institution in which members could vote on issues. The assembly was convened during times of crisis and was regarded as the highest authority in the Sikh community.
During the Mughal dynasty, the ruler of Lahore, Zakarya Khan, offered the Sikhs the title of Nawab as a reward for their services. The Sikhs, on the other hand, refused to accept the title and instead called for a Sarbat Khalsa to debate the matter. This was the start of the ritual of addressing the Sarbat Khalsa.
The custom was carried on during the Sikh misls, which were effectively confederacies of Sikh chiefdoms. However, with the founding of the SGPC and the establishment of the Sikh monarchy by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1799, the need for an organization like the Sarbat Khalsa was removed.
Sarbat Khalsa In The Modern Era
The Sarbat Khalsa was convened in 1920 to examine gurdwara management, and again in 1984 following the Indian Army's Operation Blue Star in the Golden Temple. In 1986, a panthic committee issued a call for Khalistan.
On November 10, 2015, Sikh organizations hostile to the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) called for another Sarbat Khalsa. The event drew a great number of Sikhs from all over the world, and it had a considerable impact on Punjab politics. It resulted in calls for a separate Sikh state, a resurgence of calls for the release of Sikh prisoners, and the formation of a parallel committee to the SGPC.
