The Indian Air Force (IAF) has a long history of valor and sacrifice in service to the country, and 44 Squadron is an important part of that history. On April 6, 1961, 44 Squadron was formed and equipped with AN-12 aircraft. In December 1960, the squadron's personnel were trained in Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union. The squadron's first sortie to Chushul was in support of the Army on April 9, 1961.

Role In 1962 And 1971 Operations

During the 1962 operations, 44 Squadron provided logistical support to the Army in the Ladakh sector, including landing sorties at Leh and Chushul, supply airdrops to various forward posts in the Aksai Chin area, and the evacuation of a large number of fatalities. During the 1971 operations, 44 Squadron effectively used AN-12s for bombing missions, and on the first day, it flew the first mission to the Changa Manga forest ammunition depot. It received the ''Battle Honours'' for the 1971 operations, making it the IAF's only non-fighter/bomber squadron to receive this honor.

Induction Of The IL-76 aircraft

The IL-76 aircraft was delivered to India by 44 Squadron in March 1985. On June 16, 1985, it was formally inducted into the IAF. The unit crest of 44 Squadron depicts 'Himalayan Geese,' reflecting tranquillity and supremacy, as well as the global reach of one of the IAF's largest transport aircraft.

Role In IPKF Operations

During the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) operations in Sri Lanka, 44 Squadron played an important role in transporting man and material, including T-72 tanks and artillery guns, in the early hours of July 30, 1987, significantly contributing to the airlift effort. During the IPKF operations, which ended in March 1990, the squadron flew extensively.

Current Operations

The 44 Squadron has kept up its outstanding service to the country in recent years. More than 2,000 troops and various pieces of equipment were airlifted to the Ladakh sector during the ongoing operations in Eastern Ladakh. The squadron practiced landings at Thoise after the IL-76 aircraft were inducted in 1985, and in early 1986 it inducted tanks and artillery guns to the Ladakh region.
