Description

Insects have a vast and diverse world, with new species being discovered all the time. Aarini Ghosh and Ranjana Jaiswara led a team of researchers who discovered three new species of bush crickets in India. These new Hexacentrus cricket species are unique in their ability to produce ultrasonic sounds of up to 60 kHz.

Three New Hexacentrus Cricket Species Have Been Discovered

The researchers named the new species Hexacentrus khasiensis, discovered in Meghalaya, as well as Hexacentrus ashoka and Hexacentrus tiddae, discovered in Haryana's Sonepat district.

Characteristics Of The Hexacentrus Cricket Species

The Hexacentrus cricket family is famous for its ability to produce ultrasonic sounds up to 60 kHz, which are beyond human hearing range. Their calling sound is an unusual mechanical buzz that other Hexacentrus crickets can hear.

Bush Crickets And The Production Of Sound

Bush crickets, also known as katydids, are members of the Orthoptera order. True crickets (ground and tree crickets) and bush crickets/katydids are the two groups. Crickets and bush crickets both make sounds with modified forewings. The tympana in each forelimb of crickets and bush crickets receives sounds in the same way that the human eardrum does.

Hexacentrus Cricket Species Habitat And Predatory Nature

Hexacentrus cricket species primarily inhabit bushes in the lower to middle vertical strata. They are predators and feed on a variety of smaller adult insects, eggs, and larvae. This discovery is significant because it sheds light on the unusual size and sound of Hexacentrus khasiensis, which has previously only been reported from the Khasi hills of Meghalaya.

Bush Cricket Prey And Predators

Animals in their ecosystem prey on bush crickets, as they do on other insects. They are an important source of food for bats, which can locate their prey not only through echolocation but also by listening in on sexual advertisement calls.
