The Indian Ministry of Defence recently signed three defense contracts with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) on March 29, 2023. The total cost of these three contracts is nearly Rupees 5,400 crore. This decision was made to support the modernization and self-sufficiency of India's armed forces.
The Akashteer Project
Project Akashteer, worth Rupees 1,982 crore, is the first project signed with BEL. The goal of this project is to provide indigenous, cutting-edge capabilities to the Indian Army's Air Defence units. The Indian Army will be the primary beneficiary of this project, which will improve its Air Defense capabilities and allow them to operate more effectively. This project will help India become less reliant on foreign technologies and more self-sufficient.
Sarang Electronic Support Measurement (ESM) systems
The second project with BEL is the Rupees 412 crore Sarang Electronic Support Measure (ESM) systems. The goal of this project is to provide advanced Electronic Support Measure systems for Indian Navy helicopters. This project is expected to significantly improve the Indian Navy's capabilities, allowing them to conduct more efficient reconnaissance, surveillance, and other operations.
GSAT 7B
The third project awarded by the Ministry of Defence is GSAT 7B, an advanced communication satellite. This project, worth Rupees 2,963 crore, has been awarded to NewSpace India Limited (NSIL). This communication satellite will provide India's armed forces with enhanced communication capabilities, which will aid them in critical operations.
