Description

Gujarat, known for its diverse biodiversity and wildlife, is home to the Asiatic lion, one of the world's rarest and most endangered big cat species. The Gir Forest National Park in Gujarat is home to the only remaining population of Asiatic lions. To ensure the survival and protection of the lion population, the state government intends to relocate 40 Asiatic lions to the Barda Wildlife Sanctuary, which is located 100 kilometer from the Gir Forest National Park.

Purpose Of The Translocation Project

The project's goal is to save the lion population from extinction due to diseases or environmental threats such as natural disasters or habitat loss. The relocation of lions will also create safe havens for future natural dispersal, which is critical for the species' long-term survival. Furthermore, the project will breed herbivores in the sanctuary, increasing the availability of prey for lions and thus contributing to the area's lion population increase.

The Gujarat state government has given preliminary approval to the project, which is expected to be completed in stages. The first phase will involve preparing the Barada Wildlife Sanctuary, which will include building new enclosures and water sources. Once the sanctuary is completed, the lions will be introduced to the area gradually over time.

Challenges And Concerns

While the relocation project is a noble effort to protect the lion population, it is not without difficulties and concerns. According to a 2014 report by the Wildlife Institute of India, only 26 lions can live in the Barada sanctuary, which is insufficient for the proposed relocation of 40 lions. This raises concerns about the project's viability and the potential risks to the sanctuary's lion population.

Another source of concern is the possibility of conflict between lions and residents of the sanctuary. Human-lion conflict is a major problem in Gujarat, with numerous reports of lion attacks on humans and animals.
