The world witnessed the incredible power of a tropical cyclone named Freddy in February and March 2023. The storm swept across the Indian Ocean in less than five weeks, causing extensive damage and destruction along the way. Freddie was named the fourth named hurricane of the 2022-23 Australian region cyclone season and the second very intense tropical cyclone of the 2022-23 southwest Indian Ocean cyclone season. It caused the deaths of hundreds of people.

Construction And Intensification

Freddie formed as a disturbance in the Australian territory cyclone basin's monsoon trough. The storm quickly intensified into a category 4 severe tropical cyclone, causing significant damage  and destroying everything in its path. Freddie intensified further as it moved into the southwest Indian Ocean basin, becoming a powerful tropical cyclone. The storm's wind speed reached 155 mph, making it a category 5 hurricane according to the Safir-Simpson scale.

Landslides And Impacts

Freddie made two landfalls in Madagascar and Mozambique before becoming extinct on March 15 in Mozambique. The storm had severe consequences, causing devastating flash floods in Malawi, extensive infrastructure damage in Mozambique, and putting millions at risk of food insecurity. The storm killed at least 307 people in Malawi, Mozambique, Madagascar, and Zimbabwe. Freddie is regarded as one of the most deadly storms to strike the continent in the last two decades.
