Lake Sils is a breathtaking natural wonder in Grisons' Upper Engadine valley. The lake, which is named after the village of Sils im Engadin, is a popular tourist destination known for its clear waters and surrounding mountain ranges. A Czech man recently accomplished an unprecedented feat of human endurance by diving into this freezing lake without a wetsuit and reaching a depth of 52.1 feet.

Geography Of Lake Sils

Lake Sils is located between the Maloja Pass and Lake Silvaplana at an elevation of 1,797 metres above sea level. The lake is surrounded by several towering mountains, including the 3,000-meter-high Piz Corvatsch, Piz Grevasalvas, and Piz da la Margna. The drainage basin of the lake reaches its apex at Piz Fora and includes the Vadrec da Fedoz glacier. Lake Sils, with a surface area of 4.1 square kilometres, is the largest natural lake in the Alps above 1,000 metres. The lake was formed by a prehistoric landslide dam, similar to the nearby Lake Silvaplana.

David Vencl’s Dive

David Vencl, a 40-year-old Czech man, accomplished an incredible feat of human endurance in Lake Sils. He descended to a depth of 52.1 metres without a wetsuit and emerged unscathed, completing the task in a single breath. In 2021, Vencl was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records for swimming the entire length of a frozen lake in the Czech Republic.

The Dive Experience

Due to the combination of cold water, a lack of oxygen, and pressure issues, Vencl's dive was unique and challenging. The plunge into the icy waters, with temperatures ranging from 1 to 4 degrees Celsius, took him one minute and 54 seconds, a little longer than expected.Vencl dove through a hole in the ice and recovered a sticker from a depth of 50 metres before resurfacing.
