The World Consumer Rights Day 2023 was celebrated on March 15. The theme of World Consumer Rights Day 2023 was "Empowering consumers through clean energy transitions". This day was commemorated by the Department of Consumer Affairs by leveraging technology to reduce reliance on traditional energy sources and promote a rapid transition to clean energy solutions that are sustainable, secure, affordable, and accessible to consumers.

World Consumer Rights Day's History

World Consumer Rights Day has been celebrated with the goal of empowering and protecting consumers worldwide since March 15, 1983. It was inspired by US President John F. Kennedy's address to Congress on March 15, 1962, in which he was the first world leader to emphasise the importance of consumer rights. Since then, organisations like Consumer International have marked the occasion by hosting a variety of activities and campaigns to defend consumer rights.

Consumer Rights In India: The Consumer Protection Act Is Enacted

On December 9, 1986, the Indian Parliament passed the Consumer Protection Act, which gave customers more power and established consumer councils, forums, and appellate courts to resolve consumer complaints. This Act significantly improved consumer rights in India by providing them with protection from unfair trade practises, access to goods and services at competitive prices, and the right to be informed about the quality, standard, and price of goods and services.

The Six Basic Consumer Rights Embedded In The Act

The Consumer Protection Act of 1986 established six fundamental consumer rights that serve as a guide for Indian consumers:

•  The first right is the right to be heard in a proper forum.

• The second right is the right to seek redress in the event of unfair business practises.

• The third right is the right to consumer education, which entails informing consumers about their rights and the procedures for seeking redress.

• The fourth right is the right to goods and services at reasonable prices, which protects consumers from being taken advantage of by unscrupulous traders.

• The fifth right is the right to be informed about the quality, potency, purity, standard, and price of goods and services.

• The sixth right is the right to be protected from unfair marketing of goods and services that endanger consumers' lives and property.
