Description
Dick Fosbury, the legendary American high jumper who forever changed the sport with his unconventional technique, died at the age of 76. Fosbury won a gold medal in the high jump at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, shocking the world. His revolutionary style is known as the Phosbury Flop.
The Birth Of Fosbury Flop
Fosbury Flops did not become successful overnight; it took years of experimentation and practise. Fosbury began his athletic career using traditional straddle technique, but quickly realised it wasn't producing the desired results. During a high school meet in 1963, Fosbury decided to forego Straddle in favour of the Caesar technique, which was not widely used at the time.
Dick Fosbury's Legacy
Following the Olympics, the Phosbury flop became the most widely used technology on the planet. It was quickly adopted by high jumpers of all ages and abilities, and it continues to be the dominant technology to this day. Fosbury's invention forever altered the sport of the high jump, earning him a place in the Olympic Hall of Fame.
Fosbury's influence extends beyond athletics. His creative thinking and willingness to take risks inspire people from all walks of life. He demonstrated that taking an unconventional path can lead to success.
