Description

Shab-e-Barat, also known as the Night of Forgiveness, is a significant Islamic event celebrated on the 15th of the Islamic month of Shaban each year. The words ‘Shab’ means night and ‘Bharaat’ means forgiveness. It is observed in South Asia, Central Asia, and Turkey.

Is Shab e-Barat A Festival?

No. It is a forgiveness ceremony. This ceremony is observed by both Shia and Sunni Sufi Muslims. Muslims are divided into seven distinct groups. Sunni, Whabbi, Shia, Berelvi, Deobandi, Sufi, and Salfi are among them. Sunni is the most populous branch. This community comprises 85% to 90% of Muslims. They are primarily concentrated in Egypt, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Bangladesh. The majority of Muslims in Gaza and the West Bank are Sunni Muslims.

What Is Shab e-Barat?

Shab-e-Barat is a holy night when Allah is said to be more forgiving, and sincere prayers are said to wash away sins. The night is also used to pray for deceased and sick family members, as well as to seek mercy. Muslims plan for the festival by making sweets and decorating mosques. Worshippers pray and seek forgiveness until the next day on Shab-e-Barat, followed by a pre-dawn meal before the fast.

Shab e-Barat Customs And Traditions

On this night, Muhammad is said to have gone to the graveyard to pray for the dead. Even on this day during Shab e-Barat, Muslims visit the graveyard at night and recite some Kuran verses.

Where Is Shab e-Barat Celebrated?

Japan, Turkey, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iraq, and Iran all observe it. It is celebrated in Iran in the Greater Khorasan region (early Persia) as well as in the Kurdish region. In Iran, the ceremony is mostly used to honour the souls of the deceased. Children are the focal point of the ceremony in Iraq. Children are thought to be god's incarnation. Giving them chocolates is pleasing God and obtaining forgiveness from Him.

Dhikr devotions are practised in Indonesia. Dhikr is a type of meditation practise. Fasting, charity, lighting lamps, wearing new clothes, and making halwa are all associated with the ceremony in India.
