The Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) discovered lithium reserves in Karnataka's Madhya district during preliminary surveys. They estimate that 1,600 tonnes of the resource exist in pegmatite rocks. This follows the Central Government's decision to begin commercial exploration for the rare mineral in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
About Pegmatite Rocks
Pegmatites are a type of rare earth mineral. They are igneous rocks. Pegmatite rocks include tungsten, apatite, fluorite, tourmaline, and aquamarine. They have a similar appearance to granite. Pegmatites are found primarily in the states of Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Odisha.
About AMD
The AMD is India's Department of Atomic Energy's oldest unit. It is in charge of locating mineral deposits required for the country's nuclear power programme. It was founded in 1948 as the Rare Minerals Survey Unit, and it has since been renamed the Raw Materials Division, the Atomic Minerals Division, and finally its current name. The organization's headquarters are in Hyderabad, with seven regional centres.
The AMD is part of the Department of Atomic Energy. It is directly under the control of the country's Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is in charge of the Ministry of Atomic Energy. The AMD is one of the Atomic Energy Department's research wings. AMD's research wings are in Mumbai, Kalpakkam, RRCAT in Indore, and Kolkata.
AMD conducts surveys to investigate raw materials needed for nuclear power in the country. Though AMD's primary mission is to identify Uranium resources in the country, it also works to recover rare earth metals.
Offshore Investigative Wings Of AMD
The offshore investigative wings are located in Vizag and Trivandrum. In addition to these two cities, there are seven other regional centres - Bangalore, Hyderabad, Jaipur, New Delhi, Nagpur, Jamshedpur, and Shillong. However, the offshore investigations are handled solely by the centres in Vizag and Trivandrum.
