The Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar is awarded annually to outstanding young performers under the age of 40. The nominees' ages are determined based on their ages on April 1 of that year. The Yuva Puraskar is awarded in five categories: music, dance, theatre, and puppetry, as well as contribution/scholarship in performing arts. Each year, only 33 Yuva Puraskar awards are given out.

The award for 2019, 2020, and 2021 was recently presented to 102 artists. This year's honorees include 19 artists from the northeast.

About Ustad Bismillah Khan

Bismillah Khan was a well-known Shehnai musician. He lived from 1916 to 2006. His Hindustani Classical music is well-known. The legend is credited with elevating the instrument to legendary status. His performances and concerts resurrected and boosted the reputation of the long-forgotten Shehnai. Shehnai gradually became the music of five-star hotels and corporate events. Khan, despite being a Muslim, performed at both Hindu and Muslim functions.

He was chosen to perform at the Red Fort during India's first independence celebrations. Every year since then, his music has been played on television.

About Shehnai

Shehnai is a traditional Indian musical instrument. It is made from wood. The sound of Shehnai is thought to bring sanctity and good fortune. The Shehnai is very similar to the South Indian Nadaswaram.
